Suggestion 1

You should have on your exploration ship are hydrogen. Atmospheric thrusters will only end up being excess mass once in space. For internals, keep things simple. Cockpit, h2o2 generator, h2 tank, survival kit, 1-2 batteries, antenna, gyro, ore detector, connector. The connector and cockpit should have enough room for platinum and uranium storage. If you locate an asteroid somewhere above your planetary base that has a good amount of ice and some cobalt, set up a small refining base there. Solar on the ship doesn’t make as much sense as having a recharge station on an asteroid somewhere due to power differences in small and large solar panels. Being all hydrogen, you shouldn’t be using too much power just from moving it around, so don’t be afraid to use the survival kit to establish a foothold somewhere.

When in space, park the ship close to an asteroid but don’t get too picky about location. Use your suits jetpack and mining drill to do most of the scouting as this will conserve hydrogen. Locating ice should really be your main priority as you won’t be able to return with the ship without it. From there, start marking asteroids with GPS and drift between clusters. If it isn’t uranium or platinum, just mark and keep going. If you have a foothold base, you can mine silver or cobalt too, but should only do with the intention of remaining in space a long time before making a return trip. You’ll want the cargo space you have for those materials you specifically went up to space for.

It isn’t pretty, but all the functional stuff you need is there. Just fill the tank, load up with ice, and you’re golden.

A couple of atmo thrusters are always a good plan:
Helps you get some altitude before you start using the hydrogen thrusters (which means you have more H2 left for maneuvers when you make out of the gravity).
Also gives you a bit of a safety net when returning to earth; you don’t have to rely on the hydrogen thrusters to get you back to base.

A parachute block isn’t a bad plan either. Just in case you come back with too heavy of a load or if your ship energy gets too low to make it back to base. Your first space ship will likely only get used for one trip before you build a new one, but that is no reason to risk a hard landing when you don’t have to.

For components you’re most likely going to want 2 batteries, 02/h2 generator, h2 tank. Personally I wouldn’t go up without at least 1 medium cargo container worth of storage.
Plus the ship essentials; cockpit, antenna, ore detector, gyro, thrusters etc..
Survival kit is a possible, but unless you’re going up there with the intention of making an outpost on one of the asteroids you don’t need it.
Connector is a bit of a luxury; doesn’t store as much as a cargo container for its weight, and given the relatively small amount of ore you’ll be bringing back, hand-loading it into storage isn’t all that much hassle: save the connector for the second iteration.

Also don’t forget to put a couple of o2 bottles and a couple of h2 bottles in the ship storage; you’ll want them when you go outside.

Also, resist the temptation to make the ship look pretty: fuel is a factor and you don’t really want to be hauling around any extra armour blocks that you don’t have to.

Suggestion 3

First, don’t underestimate a parachute especially if this is your first exploration into space, fill the thing as you have more chance of keeping your ship if you run out of fuel on assent or even return trip if for some reason you don’t find ice but everything else you’re looking for.

Landing gear is a good idea if you are still caught in the gravity of the planet as it will save you burning fuel to maintain position in space.

Make a platform on the first asteroid, if it’s out of the gravity field then all the better, if it’s not then you can have some fun making unmanned probes to load up with resources and if straight above your starting location just set them loose and let them parachute down ( you will need to set up the probe a bit with timer blocks and other things so don’t just add a parachute to a cargo can and expect it to land nice and gentle for you ).

Have the usual life support, H2/O2 generator, survival kit, oxygen tank and hydrogen tank, a few spare bottles of each O2 and H2 for your inventory, don’t forget to fill before setting off, you’ll need plenty of ice for the round trip and to fill the tanks.

Decent storage to last as long as you will be up there, take some metal grids and tubes ( both large and small ) with you, the rest of the parts you should be able to make up in space for a small platform just mine a bit of stone, there is no shortage of it and makes use of the survival kit.


Charge the batteries.

Parachutes go on the top of the craft ( this might go without saying just like connecting it to the conveyor system if the canvas is stored in cargo).

Setup your parachute, they don’t open automatically, set to a shortcut to deploy or a predefined altitude, just not too low, maybe 1000m but don’t hold me to that depending on the size of your ship.

Don’t use atmo engines it can be tempting but without a source of extra power you’re just wasting battery and gaining mass for no reason.

Check All your storage and tanks before leaving, some will say a H2/O2 generator is sufficient to use the engines but this means you need a huge amount of ice that you have to cart around and once it’s gone you’re dead in space if you don’t find any.

Connect All storage / tanks so you can access items from any part of the conveyor system.
